There’s A Role For You In Construction

By Sommer Leach - CITB

When looking at an industry as big as construction, it can be difficult to know what role might be best for you, or even how many possibilities there are. Whether you want to help build the next record-breaking skyscraper or work on an important transport project such as HS2, there will be a job waiting for you that fits your skills and interests.

Here are some areas of construction that you could look into:

Roles in Project Management

Do you have good organisational skills and enjoy working in a team environment? Project management could be perfect for you. You will oversee the planning and delivery of a project and work with clients, sub-contractors and other industry professionals.

As a project manager, you would typically have a starting salary of around £25,000-30,000 which can increase towards £50,000 or £60,000 as your career progresses, depending on who your employer is, the hours you work, and your location.

You can qualify to be a project manager through university, college courses or apprenticeships. Each path will involve a different style of learning, and you should investigate which one may work best for you.

Roles as an Engineer

As a civil engineer, you would be responsible for the planning, design and management of large-scale construction projects which could include areas such as transportation, environment or maritime.

As a structural engineer, you would be responsible for ensuring good durability of structures, such as making sure they can withstand strong forces or extreme conditions.

There are many other types of engineers in the industry. You can get started in a career in engineering by completing an engineering degree.

Roles in Health and Safety

An important aspect of any industry is health and safety. For example, in construction, you could be a Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) Advisor. You would be responsible for ensuring that companies, organisations and other employees of the industry adhere to various health and safety regulations and meet quality control requirements.

As with many other job roles, you can obtain the qualifications required through several different routes. You could do an undergraduate course at university in an area such as business, engineering or construction. You could also do an apprenticeship in a similar subject area or obtain a relevant certificate from a college.

Roles in Marketing

Marketing is key to any successful business. Simply put, it sells the business and its products and services – so a creative eye is key. Many start their careers with a degree in marketing.

You could be a property sales advisor, which involves interacting with potential buyers of new-build homes, setting up showhomes, and looking at sales data.

PR officers look after brand image and reputation and work to maintain a good public image of a company and its products. You might be responsible for representing a construction company at an event or conference and promoting its services.
