WELCOME TO THE AUTUMN EDITION OF JOBS & CAREERS

Looking for work is never easy, even in a strong job market. The UK jobless rate held steady at a near 11-year low of 4.9% in the three months to August, according to the Office for National Statistics.

‘These figures show employment continued to grow over the summer and vacancies remain at high levels, suggesting continuing confidence in the economy,’ the ONS said. This is potentially good news for all of you. However, some areas (care) are recruiting more than others (banking).

We’ve put lots of career suggestions in this issue, from teaching, to construction and manufacturing. Perhaps you’ll be inspired to apply for a job in a field that you haven’t considered before?

The days of finding employment after school or college and staying in that sector until retirement are long gone for most of us. Recent research shows that most young people try multiple jobs before they settle on one to follow as a career. And even then they may hold 10-14 different roles within their lives.

So don’t put pressure on yourself if you’re still unsure of what path to take. Whatever job you decide on, it’s not set in stone, and if you discover that you’re unsatisfied a few years down the line, you can retrain and change direction.

We’ve also included lots of practical advice on applying for jobs and aceing interviews. Good luck forging your career path.
