VSO

By J&C Team

Each year approximately 1,150 people join VSO to help tackle poverty by sharing their skills and knowledge with communities in 34 of the world’s poorest countries. In doing so, we create lasting change. Professional volunteers work in whatever fields are necessary to address the forces that keep people in poverty – from education and health through helping people learn the skills to make a living. In doing so, they invest in local people, so the impact they have endures long after their placement ends. In our 50 years tackling poverty, VSO has become a more international organisation: today a VSO volunteer is just as likely to be from Kenya, India or the Philippines as Newcastle, Birmingham or London. In the last year our volunteers delivered half a million days of work, supporting local organisations to improve the lives of millions of people. VSO’s volunteers and partners reached over four million women and men with HIV and AIDS services in 14 countries. Globally, we supported 31,000 schools to improve the quality of education for more than five million children in 17 countries. In addition to creating a real impact on the lives of disadvantaged people across the world, VSO volunteers develop professional skills which can improve their careers.
