National Apprenticeship Week 2018 is a celebration of the successes of the thousands of apprentices who complete their apprenticeship programmes every year. Apprentices from West London College have achieved a lot and continue to compete in regional and national competitions to showcase their skills and potential.
Apprenticeships offer many benefits for those who choose them as a pathway to career as well as for businesses and the wider economy. They can help to close the skills gap and future-proof the British economy. They also help young people progress both professionally and personally, as they present them with opportunities they would normally miss. Apprenticeships are available across most industry sectors and are a great way to gain recognised qualifications while working and gaining real workplace experience.
The West London Way
Megan Walsh is a Business Administration apprentice at West London College’s training arm, the Evolve Learning Group. As well as progressing in her role she has also picked up accolades in the locality, winning Highly Commended in the Ealing Apprenticeship Network Apprentice of the Year Award last year.
Megan said:
“I have learnt so many useful skills already. Most of my day is liaising with employers, teachers and parents so I can support the team to meet its objectives.
“My apprenticeship will be over soon but thanks to the skills, experience and connections I have made here I am excited for my next step.”
Another award-winning West London College apprentice is Josh Street, a plastering apprentice who currently works at Pinewood Studios. Josh won Apprentice of the Year at the Plaisterers Training Awards last year, an award that recognised not only Josh’s hard work and results but also the passion that he puts into his projects.
Two other plastering apprentices from West London College, Max Ashley and Jon Spraggon, also won a recognition for their skills and dedication. Max finished third and Jon won a bursary, allowing him and fellow students to learn crucial heritage plastering skills.
It is not only current West London College apprentices who celebrated success last year. Former carpentry apprentice Joe Needham won a silver award at SkillBuild 2017 in Birmingham and has qualified to compete as the member of the UK’s squad at the 2018 WorldSkills competition.
