Get set up for success

By J&C Team

Whether you are just starting out or are looking for a change of direction, planning your career path can be a daunting prospect! Here are my hints and tips to help you set yourself up for success.

Choose your field of work

Firstly, you will need to decide on the field you would like to work in. Think about your strengths, the experience you already have and what you enjoy doing, and see if you can match this to a particular area of work. For example, if you are an outgoing person who is looking for a varied role involving face to face customer interaction, then a career in the hospitality industry might be of interest.

Identify employers of interest

Once you’ve decided on the area that interests you, do some research on employers in this area. Visiting company websites is a good starting point, and you should also follow the companies you’re interested in on social media. This can give you an insight into what working for a particular company might be like, and what their values and priorities are. This will help you establish if there are particular companies you have an affinity with and would like to explore further.

Attend relevant careers events

You might find it useful to attend careers events which are taking place in your local area. Often employers will exhibit at such events if they are recruiting, or are looking to build up a pipeline of talent in anticipation of future requirements. These events are a great opportunity to meet prospective employers face to face and find out about upcoming vacancies. They also give you a chance to make a great impression! Our recruitment teams attend graduate fairs at universities across the country to promote our corporate and pub graduate programmes. We also hold open days at pubs across our estate, so that people looking to take on their own pub can come along to find out more about us and the types of opportunities we have to offer.

And lastly, look to the future

If you’re someone who is keen to progress, find out about companies which offer opportunities for development and a clear career path. This demonstrates that the company has a real commitment to its employees and promotes from within. At Marston’s we offer our retail staff access to e-learning, apprenticeships and a suite of development programmes, enabling them to enhance their skills and build a career.
